New Art Club introduced at RMHS

The new art club at Rolling Meadows is simply for anyone who loves art. Created by seniors Mary Donlon, Tracy Malter and Emma Werle, this new club offers the freedom to design various pieces of art each month while also giving students an opportunity to interact with people through the common bond of art.

Last year, Donlon, Malter, and Werle wanted a place where students could share their passion for art while also having the opportunity to finish projects that were assigned in class. Because they felt art class was not a big enough platform to do so, the three girls decided to create an art club.

“This club is mainly just a nice way to get together and all do one thing we love: art,” Donlon said. “It’s for everyone who loves art.”

The club is open to any students wishing to share their art and learn about art techniques from other students. It meets a few times per month with certain days dedicated specifically to designing art pieces and other days for collaboration with other students. The open studio days are from 6-8 p.m. at night while the collaboration days are directly after school.

Students do not have to be enrolled in an art class at Rolling Meadows or be artistically inclined to be able to join the club. It is open to any students who are interested in art. In fact, the leaders of the club want to encourage students who aren’t good at certain art forms to join the club. This way, students can learn from each other while also improving their own art skills.

Students who are currently enrolled in an art class at Meadows can also participate in the nightly studio hours. While there, they can finish projects due for class and have all the necessary supplies to finish their projects.

Along with Donlon, Malter, and Werle, there are two additional staff sponsors: Martha Nava and Catherine Pach. Both teachers are excited to see how the club grows in terms of student involvement and artistic expression.

“This will be a great opportunity for students to learn from each other,” Nava said. “I’m excited to provide more opportunities for students at Rolling Meadows to be involved in our growing visual art program.”

The club just had an opening meeting on October 4 and will have another meeting soon. If you would like to see when future meetings are, Nava or Pach can tell you more information. Otherwise, you can talk to Donlon, Malter, or Werle about joining the club.
