What had previously seemed like the starting of a somewhat peaceful new year, a new slate for good events — quickly came crashing down as the unprecedented events occurred at the capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Before this revolutionary event, against the word of his political advisors, President Trump gathered people and performed a rally located in close proximity with the Capital. In this rally, he once again reinstated how he believed that the election was fake, using the words, “They rigged it like they’ve never rigged an election before.” Following the statement and other things said about the rigged election, which has absolutely no evidence in which claims have been blundered in several state courts, he words the phrase that will surely go down in history: “After this, we’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you, to the capital,” Trump declared, “Cause you’ll never take back the country with weakness… Demand the Congress do the right thing… fight like hell.” 

Almost immediately after this rally had ended, news around the country displayed people as they attempted to breach the capital. At the same time, Congress was working to ratify and finalize President-Elect Joe Biden’s win. People at home watched in a stupor as people climbed the capitol walls, bashed the doors with shields and one person even threw a fire extinguisher at the police. Eventually, the capital was breached and people ran through the halls with rage. Some even carried the very controversial confederate flag which represents the oppression of blacks, and prejudice in America. 

Congress members trembled in fear, being told to get down after the rioters were able to break the door leading to the congress. “I did not know if I was going to make it to the end of that day alive,” Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York said on Instagram Live on Tuesday. “It is not an exaggeration to say that many, many members of the House were nearly assassinated.” 

The nightmare proved boundless as it continued painfully slowly. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Washington implemented a curfew time. Most Washington citizens heeded this call, but unfortunately, this curfew edict was not followed by a large sum of the rioters who proceeded with the destruction. Within the blink of an eye what was an already incredibly disturbing and extreme event turned deadly.  

A woman was shot by a U.S. Capitol Police officer in plainclothes, after “multiple individuals forced entry into the Capitol building” and “attempted to gain access to the House room, which was still in session.” Robert Contee, chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia said. “She was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.” By the end of the insurrection, one woman died and 2 men suffered ‘medical emergencies’.

Following the situation, Capitol security has increased, and police troops are preparing for the incoming inauguration which they predict may possibly end in disaster. President Trump has also been issued another impeachment which is currently underway, naming him as the first president who has been impeached twice. Allegations include incitement of an insurrection, a federal offense, which according to 18 U.S. Code § 2384, can result in a “fine[d] under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.”
