Do you want to have the opportunity to build deeper connections with the deaf community? Do you want to cultivate friendships and relationships with people outside of the hearing world? Do you want to unlock a new skill you never knew you had? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then Rolling Meadows High School encourages you to join the American Sign Language Club.
The American Sign Language (ASL) Club is a student and teacher led group, organized by juniors Dhvani Patel, Eliza Asher, and teacher Joy Ruckolt. It is a place where students come together as a community to create a welcoming environment where everyone can learn sign language. The club meets twice a month, and anyone who wants to participate is welcome to join, whether they are beginners or experienced. “Anyone is welcome! It doesn’t matter if you are new to it or not,” said Ruckolt.
There are plenty of reasons to join, including being able to communicate with more people! “I think it’s important that people know American sign language in their daily lives. Sign language itself and seeing someone interpret it is really cool to see” said Patel.
The promotion for the club is aimed at hoping people are excited to acquire a new skill that can increase communication. “People can learn something new. It’s more of a challenge for you because it uses a different use of language and grammar” Asher said.
Meanwhile, students who are signed up for ASL Club shared their own reasons for joining. “I was already learning sign language before I joined. I now have another place to learn for that.” said sophomore Damien Vrchota.
On the contrary, junior Patrycja Daniluk just found the language intriguing and like something she wanted to pursue. “I decided to join because the club and sign language just seemed interesting to me,” said. Overall, the ASL Club provides students opportunities to learn and explore their interests.
Overall, if you are someone who is interested in joining a new club and has an interest in communicating with the deaf community by learning sign language, the ASL club would be the perfect club for you. It is never too late to join. The club is looking forward to meeting you!
