The Pacer’s Hannah Oloro Chooses Her Top 10 Favorite Netflix Shows And Movies

As people continue to spend more and more time at home due to this global pandemic, Netflix is a crucial survival tool to get through this era of our lives. Here are 10 of my favorite Netflix shows that I think you will enjoy.

10. She- Ra and the princess of power

If you like lots of action, plenty of humor, and a little bit of suspense, this is just the show for you. “She-Ra and The Princess of Power” are set on the planet of Ethiria and are (obviously) much different than the world we live in today… There is currently a war going on between the magical princesses and the evil Horde army led by Hordak. One day when 2 Horde soldier best friends (Katra and Adora) decide to adventure past to Horde territory, Adora finds a magical sword capable of transforming her into a powerful princess. Soon her path aligns with the enemy, and she discovers that all she had been taught by Horde was a lie. Will the princesses be able to defend their territory with this powerful princess? Will Katra ever forgive Adora for her betrayal? You know what to do: watch She-Ra and The Princess of Power to find out.

9. The space between us

Gardner Elliot is the first human to be born on Mars and is born a secret. With the help of technology, he’s able to connect with a teenage girl living on earth named Tulsa. Through the internet platform, they can connect and seem to develop quite a good relationship through chat. When the day finally comes that Gardener can travel to earth for the first time, scientists soon realize that his body is not compatible with earth’s atmosphere and the longer he spends in it, the sicker he will become. Tired of his life in captivity and secrecy, Garden locates Tusla and together venture to experience the earth that he could only ever watch from afar. This movie is an emotional rollercoaster where you will be filled with suspense, cry, smile, and laugh. It has it all! Watch this movie and have a little glimpse of Gardner’s life and what it is like to be born a secret.

8. The Dragon prince

Long ago humans mystical creatures of Xadia lived together in unity. And of course, there has to be that one person who ruins it; one man hungry for power, goes down the path of dark magic which requires magical energy from the creatures in Xadia. He uses his magic against the creatures and slays the most powerful dragon in the land. Angered by this task, the mystical creatures separate themselves from humans and have their land guarded by the red dragon. After nearly 1000 years, an assassin elf invading the human world somehow crosses paths with the prince of the human kingdom.  As time goes by, they realize that they aren’t so different and humans could once again be reunited with the mystical side of the Xadia. If you love action, fantasy, and an adorable dragon character, this is just the show for you. Join Callum, Ezran and Raylan on their journey to restore balance in Xadia and once again have humans and mystical creatures joined as one.

7. The legend of Korra

Following The 2004 hit show “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, the series “The Legend of Korra” is quite a nice change from the adventure of such a young avatar. In the show, we watch Korra as she masters the four elements and seeks to regain peace in the world. She faces the blood bending psychopath Aman, the crazy ‘I will restore balance to the world’ by literally demolishing it: Oonavatu, Zahir, and of course control freak Kuvira. This show displays yet another strong woman who is able to withstand and fight so much as she makes more changes in her life that any Avatar could imagine. If you like the original Avatar I guarantee that you will enjoy this series too (Maybe even a bit more).

6. Lost in space

After a huge impact on planet earth that caused human life to be threatened, astronauts are relocating families in space at Alpha Centauri. One of these families— The Robinsons, is part of the 24th mission to be relocated. But all things don’t go to plan when the Robinsons airship is unexpectedly forced to land due to an internal problem. With many altercations including Judy being frozen alive under the water, and an unexpected friendship between young Will and an alien robot, the family works together as they navigate themselves and find Alpha Centauri: lost in space. This movie gives you an insight as to what it would be like if we were able to undergo intergalactic travel, discover aliens, and experience many extreme climates and experiences. Join the Robinsons as they fight for their lives and try to make their way lost in space.

5. Cursed

According to the Netflix wiki, ‘‘Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Throughout her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.” This was personally one of my favorite shows to watch as it showed how much confidence Nimue had with her ability to lead and fight for those she loved.

4. On my block

When a group of teenagers finds themselves involved with the gang, the uncovering of neighborhood legend, these teens find themselves in situations that I’m sure you could never imagine that you would be in. This hilarious, heartfelt, and action-filled movie will let you in on what it’s like for this group of teenagers to live in the dangerous community of Freeridge. If no quite into sci-fi and like watching realistic shows with a lot of suspense, this is just the sow for you.

3. The Umbrella academy

Together the family ventures out to find the cause of this doomsday an attempt to save the world yet again. As they seek this ordeal, the unearth secrets that their ‘father’ never intended f0re them to find out. I love this show so much and I assure you you will love it too. With Five’s hilarious bluntness, Luther’s huge heart, Klaus’s crazy self, and the rest of the umbrella academy, this tv series is sure to give you a run for your money.

2. Avatar: the last airbender

I love this show so much. The amount of times I watched this show is insane! This show that Netflix has recently put on their platform caused a huge rave as people once again relived the fantasy of their favorite childhood action show. I just have to: “Water, earth, fire, air. My grandma used to tell me stories about the old days. A time of peace, when the Avatar kept the balance between the water tribes, earth kingdom, fire nation, and air nomads. But that all changed when the fire nation attacked. Only the Avatar: master of all 4 elements, only he could stop the ruthless firebenders, but when the world needed him most he vanished.” Basically 100 years after Avatar Roku disappears, Sokka and Katara of the water tribe discover a boy in an iceberg who is (strangely enough) still alive, and who happens to be the avatar. Together they travel the world helping the Avatar (Aang) master the 4 elements so that he can once again restore balance to the world by defeating the fire lord.

1.

Once upon a time

According to IMDb, ‘‘A young woman with a troubled past is drawn to a small town in Maine where fairy tales are to be believed.”

For Emma Swan, life has been anything but a happy ending. But when she’s reunited with Henry – the son she gave up for adoption ten years ago – on the night of her 28th birthday, everything changes. The now 10-year-old Henry is in desperate need of Emma’s help because he believes from reading a book of fairy-tales that she’s the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming – who sent her away from the Enchanted Forest to be protected from a curse that was enacted by the Evil Queen. Emma initially refuses to believe a word of Henry’s story but soon finds that his hometown of Storybrooke, Maine is more than it seems. Because it’s in Storybrooke that all of the classic characters we know are frozen in time with no memories of their former selves – except for the Evil Queen, who is Storybrooke’s mayor and Henry’s adoptive mother Regina Mills. Now, as the epic “Final Battle” for the future of both worlds approaches, Emma will have to accept her destiny and uncover the mystery behind a place where fairy-tales are to be believed. This fairytale is the most magical show I have ever watched and it’s 7 season-long series helped me survive the long and treacherous quarantine. It made me cry, laugh, and love all the characters. I was so sad when this amazing series came to an end. But make sure you watch it soon! Netflix will be removing it on September 6th.
